St. Laurentius in Munich-Gern

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in the Munich district of Gern , also called St. Laurentius Church , was built in the mid-1950s and consecrated to St. Laurentius, the deacon of Rome . The parish of St. Laurentius belonging to it is looked after by the priestly community of the Oratorians .

Architecture and building history

apse

The architect Emil Steffann drafted the plans for the church in close cooperation with the members of the Munich oratory. The architectural design of the interior with the altar in the middle and the rows of pews facing it from three sides, with the priest facing the community, was new for the time and thus anticipated the requirements of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . It served as a model for many new church buildings.

The church interior is deliberately kept simple. The tabernacle, blue enamel lecture cross, altar candlesticks and the ray monstrance are by Fritz Schwerdt .

After laying the foundation stone in June 1955, the consecration could take place on November 27, 1955 by Josef Cardinal Wendel . A year later the bells were delivered and consecrated. In 1962 an organ was purchased and the baptistery was added. The parish center with kindergarten, library and parish hall was built between 1968 and 1970. Members of the oratory are buried in a small cemetery next to the church.

Floor plan of the church interior

As early as the end of the 1920s, the need to set up a separate Catholic parish for this area was determined, as the population had grown significantly due to the construction of the Borstei housing estate . It was not until October 1, 1954, that the St. Laurentius Curate could be established and transferred to the Oratorians. It was raised to a parish just one year later , with parts of the Moosach parish of St. Martin and the Neuhaus parishes of the Heart of Jesus and St. Theresa being assigned to it. The first pastor was the later Munich Auxiliary Bishop Ernst Tewes .

The Munich Oratorians were among the first to implement the renewal of the liturgy decided by the Second Vatican Council in the organization of services in their parish of St. Laurentius. First Superior was Heinrich Kahlefeld .

location

The red brick church is located on a side street on the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal between Paschstrasse and Nürnberger Strasse. Originally there was an allotment garden on the site, which had to give way to the church in 1954.
