The Cathedral of St. Sebastian ( Slovak Katedrála svätého Šebastiána ) is located in the Rača district of Bratislava , Krasňany. It also serves as a parish church for the local community and as a cathedral church for the Slovak military ordinariate . It is named after St. Sebastian , a Roman soldier and martyr of the 3rd century.

history

The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1995 and blessed by Pope John Paul II in 2003 . Construction did not begin until the spring of 2007 after the building permit was granted in January 2007. The architect Ladislav Bánhegyi designed the plans. The roof was put on in 2008. The interior work lasted until summer 2009. On June 13, 2009, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Stanislav Zvolenský . The St. Sebastian Church replaced the Church of St. Johannes von Matha as episcopal church of the military ordinariate.

Architecture and equipment

St. Sebastian is an oval room with a gallery and a 25 meter high, open, curved tower at the entrance, which carries the three-part bells. The church has about 150 seats and 100 standing places. The tent-like roof protrudes forward over the portal glass wall over the terrace, which is raised by several steps. An outside altar can be erected here for larger celebrations. The marble altar table is located in the presbytery in the central axis of the church. It contains relics of the nun Zdenka Schelingová (1916–1955), who was beatified in 2003 and who was active in the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross , and of Saint Sebastian. Behind the cathedral there is a tapestry depicting St. Sebastian, the work of the academic painter Mikuláš Klimčák. To the left of the chancel is a statue of the Virgin Mary. There is currently a simple wooden crucifix on the front wall, which will be replaced in the future by a mosaic depicting the life of St. Sebastian by Marko Ivan Rupnik .
