Trinitarian Church (Bratislava)
The Trinitarian Church (Slovak Kostol trinitárov ) or Kreuzpaterkirche or incorrectly also Dreifaltigkeitskirche / Trinitatiskirche (Slovak Kostol Najsvätejšej Trojice , Hungarian Szent Háromságtemplom ), officially the Church of St. John of Matha , is a Catholic Baroque church in Bratislava , Slovakia . It is located in the old town on Župné námestie (German county square ).
The Trinitarian Order built it on the site of an old church of St. Michael, which was destroyed along with other parts of the suburbs in the course of the Turkish wars in the 16th century. Construction began in 1717 and, although work continued until the mid-18th century, the church was consecrated in 1727. The building is from the dome with trompe l'oeil - Fresco dominated. In the main altar there is an altarpiece depicting Saints John of Matha and Felix of Valois buying prisoners held back by the Turks. Other objects are the statues of Saints Agnes and Saint Catherine and a side altar.
The Trinity Monastery was next to the church, but it was demolished in 1844 and replaced by the Bratislava County House . Various concerts have taken place in the past and from 1939 to 1994 the house was the seat of the Slovak National Council (since 1992 National Council of the Slovak Republic ) before moving to the new building on Castle Hill in 1994.
From 2003 to 2009 (construction of the modern Cathedral of St. Sebastian ) the Trinitarian Church was the cathedral church of the Slovak military ordinariate .
