Johannes studied theology in Paris , received his doctorate and was ordained a priest in 1185. Later he joined the hermit Felix von Valois (1127-1212), with whom he founded the Trinitarian order in 1198, which freed Christians from the captivity of the Saracens during the time of the Crusades .

Johannes von Matha lived for the last few years in Rome as a hermit in a room of the Dolabella Arch . He was later buried in the adjacent church of San Tommaso in Formis , but his relics were abducted to Spain in 1665. They were buried in the Trinitarian Church in Madrid and brought to Salamanca in 1966 , where the coffin, restored by the Museo Arqueológico Nacional de España , is in the religious church of San Juan de Mata, which was consecrated to him. A shoulder relic can be found in the Trinitarian Church of San Crisogono in Rome. His feast day is December 17th.

On the Charles Bridge in Prague are the hll. Johannes von Matha, Felix von Valois and Iwan and a Saracen represented as a group of sculptures. The work of art comes from the sculptor Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff .
