Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff
Ferdinand Brokoff (also: Brokof , Prokop , Czech: Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff) (baptized 9. September 1688 in Roth House , † 8. March 1731 in Prague ) was a Czech sculptor of the Baroque .
origin
Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff came from a family of sculptors from Georgenberg (Spišská Sobota) in the Spiš County . His father Johann Brokoff came to Prague after his training in Regensburg on his wanderings and in 1670 he started his own sculpture workshop, in which both sons (Michael Johann Brokoff and Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff, who was two years younger) worked.
education and profession
Ferdinand was a student of his father and continued his training with the sculptor Andreas Quitainer. From 1707 he had the citizenship of the old town of Prague and he worked in the family workshop . His role models in the design of his sculptural works were Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini and Matthias Bernhard Braun .
Brokoff participated from 1707 with independent work on the plastic decoration of the Charles Bridge . He soon became known for these figure compositions, and large commissions from the Prague and Bohemian nobility followed.
The collaboration with Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach became important for Brokoff , after whose design he created the tomb of the Bohemian high chancellor Johann Wenzel Wratislaw von Mitrowitz , located in the church of St. Jakob . In 1722 he was called to Breslau by Fischer von Erlach , where he was given the job of sculpting the cathedral chapel . In 1726 he worked again in Prague and created, among other things, the Marian column with the sculptures of the eight patrons on the Hradschin . In 1728 he acquired the citizenship of the New Town of Prague . In the same year he made the model for the stucco high altar of the Karlskirche in Vienna .
In 1729 a large order from the Cistercian monastery Grüssau in Silesia followed , in which he was given the task of decorating the monastery church under construction. There he worked on the models until 1730. After his early death, his pupil Anton Dorazil took over the management and completion of the work with a sculptor's workshop from Prague.
Like his father and brother Michael Brokoff, Brokoff was buried in the no longer existing cemetery near the Church of St. Martin in the Wall in Prague. Today a plaque on the church with the portrait of Ferdinand Maximilian commemorates the family of sculptors.
