Anton Dorazil (also: Dorasel; Dorasiel, Dora (s) il; Thorasill ; Czech: Antonín Dorazil * to 1695 probably in Prague, † 5. May 1759 in Grüssau) was a Czech sculptor of the Baroque .

Life

Anton Dorazil learned the profession of sculptor in the Prague workshop of Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff . After Brokoff received a large order from the Grüssau abbot Innozenz Fritsch for the sculptural furnishing of the new building of the Grüssau monastery church, Anton Dorazil followed him there in 1729. In 1733 he married Anna Katharina, a daughter of the local Kretschmer Melchior Puschmann, in Grüssau.

After Brokoff's death in 1731, Anton Dorazil took over the management of the sculpture workshop, in which other sculptors trained in Prague, including Johann Georg Gode († January 23, 1758), a son of the Wroclaw sculptor Johann Ludwig Gode and Johann Christian Schlesinger from Kuttenberg , were busy. The order placed with Brokoff was largely continued according to his designs and models. The following work for the Grüssau monastery is attributed to Anton Dorazil:

  • 1729–1733: figurative facade decoration based on drafts and models by Brokoff ( together with Johann Georg Gode )
  • before 1735: main altar (based on a design by Brokoff )
  • 1730–1735: Figures for the choir stalls (based on designs and models by Brokoff )
  • 1736: plastic decoration of the organ prospect (based on a design by Brokoff )
  • 1736–1738 and around 1759: sculptural decoration and stucco in the princely chapel
  • 1743–1744: Child Jesus altar with a figure from Glatz from the 17th century
  • 1744–1746: Altar of God the Father; Holy Cross Altar
  • 1748–1758: sculptures for the main altar
  • 1750: altar for the Loreto chapel; two angels with holy water bowls
  • 1751–1755: Benedict and Bernhard altar
  • 1754–1755: Altar of the Most Holy Sacrament ( together with JA Lachel )
  • 1754–1756: Sculptures for the ancestors' altar

He carried out his works mainly in wood and stucco. His most independent and mature work represents the sculptural decor and the stucco of the Piast mausoleum. The works of the Brokoff / Dorazil workshop brought the dominant stream of Bohemian Baroque to Silesia .

Anton Dorazil created the architectural main altar and pulpit for the parish church of St. Maria in Schmiedeberg in 1749.

After Dorazil's death in 1759, Joseph Anton Lachel, also from Bohemia, took over the Grüssau workshop. He married Dorazil's daughter in 1762 and also worked with his brother-in-law Roman Laurentius Dorazil , who also worked as a sculptor in Grüssauer Stiftsland and other parts of Lower Silesia.
