Marko Ivan Rupnik SJ (born November 28, 1954 in Zadlog, Idrija municipality ) is a Slovenian Roman Catholic priest , theologian and visual artist who has made a name for himself with mosaic designs for numerous churches, including the Redemptoris Mater chapel in the Vatican and the new basilicas in Fátima and San Giovanni Rotondo .

Life

Rupnik joined the Society of Jesus in 1973 after finishing high school . He studied philosophy in Ljubljana , from 1977 art at the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and from 1981 theology at the Gregoriana . In 1985 he received the ordination and continued his studies with a focus on mission studies continued. From 1987-1991 he worked in the Jesuit Center in Gorizia , mainly with young people. In 1991 he received his doctorate at the Gregorian with a thesis on the relationship between art and evangelization . Since then he has lived in Rome as director of the artistic and spiritual Centro Aletti and as a lecturer at several universities. Since 1999 he has been a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture . He has received high Slovenian and international awards for his cultural work.

The logo for the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis was also designed by Rupnik. On April 1, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Consultor of the Congregation for the Clergy .
