The Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature ( Italian Pontificia Insigne Accademia di Belle Arti e Letteratura dei Virtuosi al Pantheon or just Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon ) is the oldest of the Pontifical Academies of the Roman Curia .

history

The academy was founded on the initiative of the Cistercian Desiderio d'Adiutorio by the Custody of the Holy Land (Congregazione di San Giuseppe di Terra Santa), the order organization of the Franciscans (OFM) in the Holy Land , and by Pope Paul III. recognized on October 15, 1542. 1861 was done by Pope Pius IX. the official papal recognition and in 1928 by Pope Pius XI. recognition as a university and a Pontifical Academy of Science.

Since its inception, the most important artists of the time have collaborated with the Pontifical Academy. Since the 17th century, exhibitions have been held regularly under the portico of the Pantheon with a great response from the Roman population.

In 1995 Pope John Paul II gave the Academy a new statute. The focus of the academy was placed on the promotion of studies and the promotion of the spiritual and visual arts, in particular with regard to the literature of Christian inspiration and sacred art in all its manifestations. The academy was subordinated to the Pontifical Council for Culture .

The academy is divided into five classes for architects, painters and filmmakers, sculptors, scientists and students of the disciplines for the arts and musicians, poets and writers.

Significant personalities from any nation can be elected or appointed by the Holy Father as members of the Academy , as can honorary memberships. The number of full members is limited to 50. With the 80th birthday one receives the status of an emeritus .

The president is appointed by the Pope. One of the tasks of the President is to ensure communication with the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Academies, and to organize the annual meeting of the Pontifical Academies. He is automatically a member of the Council for the Coordination of the Pontifical Academies.

The academy is located in the Palazzo della Cancelleria . President Pio Baldi , member of the Accademia di San Luca and former director of MAXXI - Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome, has been president since December 2016 ; The secretary is the sculptor Ernesto Lamagna .
