Life

So that he could finally begin to speak, one of his teachers introduced him to the literature of Pier Paolo Pasolini and he discovered poetry and drama for himself. He then studied physics at La Sapienza University in Rome and worked as an assistant director for Pasolini's films during his studies.

After graduating, he began writing novels, screenplays, and plays. Cerami was not only involved as a screenwriter on films such as Escondido , Il Nero - Hatred Was His Prayer and His Bullets Whistle the Death Song , he also worked frequently with the Italian comedian and filmmaker Roberto Benigni . His greatest success was the script work on the film drama Life is Beautiful , for which he and Benigni received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay .

On May 30, 2001 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and on May 17, 2005 with the Benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte . In 2013 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. Appointed to the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature .
