Antonio Spadaro SJ (born July 6, 1966 in Messina ) is an Italian Roman Catholic theologian and essayist.

Life

Spadaro has been a member of the Jesuit order since 1988 . In 1996 he was ordained a priest . In 1999 he obtained a diploma in communication studies from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, and in 2000 he received his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University .

He has been writing for La Civiltà Cattolica magazine since 1993 and has been its editor-in-chief since 2011. In August 2013 he interviewed Pope Francis , “the first long interview with the new Pope”. In the interview, the Pope speaks about his vision of the Church, his favorites in literature (he quotes, for example, the French writers Léon Bloy and Joseph Malègue (1876–1940)), music and art. His essay Evangelical Fundamentalism and Catholic Integralism: An Amazing Ecumenism , written with Marcelo Figueroa and published in La Civiltà Cattolica in July 2017, also caused a sensation .

Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature on February 26, 2019 .
