Francesco Mancini (born April 24, 1679 in Sant'Angelo in Vado ( PU ), † August 1758 in Rome ) was an Italian painter. He was trained in Bologna by Carlo Cignani , and his artistic expression is rooted in the classical tradition of Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region .

His artistic importance is measured both by the large number of commissions he received and by his appointments: he became an academician in France in 1732, and in 1743 and 1745 he was on the board of directors of the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature (Pontificia Insigne Accademia de Belle Arte e Lettre dei Virtuosi al Pantheon), 1750/51 director of the Accademia di San Luca . Mancini created almost exclusively ecclesiastical works and was active in the Papal States (Rome and provinces). With his works he made a significant contribution to the development of the shape and iconography of the altarpiece .

Mancini held a unique position among his contemporaries. In his paintings he developed a very individual language of form, which can be described as a synthesis of baroque elements and those of the Rococo . It is also defined as a simple and informal painting style as well as a flowing, vital color material. His students included Giovanni Andrea Lazzarini , Nicola Lapiccola and Domenico Corvi , in whose neoclassical works the master's stylistic influence lived on at the end of the century.

Works

Mancini's work includes frescoes for the redesign of Foligno Cathedral , which was damaged by an earthquake in 1703.

Some of his paintings:

  • Rest on the Flight into Egypt , Vatican Art Gallery , Room XV, inventory no. 40398. Originally associated with Carlo Maratta , the painting was correctly attributed to Mancini after its exhibition in the Vatican Pinacoteca in 1932.
  • Fight between Amor and Pan , Vatican Art Gallery, Room XV, inventory no. 40748.
  • La Castità punisce Amore , German analogous: Chastity beats love , Palazzo del Quirinale Rome, Prima sala di reppresentanza (3).

Pope Clement XIV acquired three paintings by Francesco Mancini in 1772.
