St. Paul (Graz-Liebenau)
The Church of St. Paul and parish Graz-Liebenau is a Roman Catholic church in the 7th Graz district Liebenau .
History and design
From a barrack that originated from Graz-Thalerhof airport , an emergency church , the barrack church of the Annunciation , was built in 1948 for the constantly growing parish population (St. Paul parish since 1949). Between 1984 and 1987, a pastoral care center including a new church was built according to the plans of the architect Reinhard Schöpf . The old rectory is connected to the church with its bell tower, which can be seen from afar, through an arcade .
The buildings, which also include the old emergency church, are grouped around a church square. At the entrance to the sacred building there is a portico with a pyramid roof. The design language of the Church of St. Paul is kept simple and has clear lines. Only the three-aisled main room, a round window and a continuous glass window zone are reminiscent of a medieval building tradition. The windows were designed by Alois Moosbacher and show the church patron Paul and the mother of God Maria . The organ was built in 2002 by the Rieger Orgelbau company from Schwarzach, Vorarlberg.
In the weekday chapel (former barrack church) there is a wooden cross on the altar, which was carved in 1946 by imprisoned German soldiers.
