history

The church, originally called the Ursuline Church, was built from 1694 to 1704 by Bartholomäus Ebner for the Sisters of the Ursulines . The founding of the monastery was approved by Emperor Leopold I in 1686. The former city moat used to be at the site where the Trinity Church stands today. Between 1687 and 1694 five houses of the second sack were bought and demolished for the monastery complex . After the construction of a chapel for the dead  (1694/95), the foundation stone was laid in 1696. The plans for the construction of the Ursuline Monastery, which lasted from 1700 to 1722, came from Anton Leithner. The consecration of the sacred building took place in 1704 and was carried out by Prince-Bishop Franz Anton Adolph von Wagensperg .

At the time of the Josephine reforms, the monastery of the Ursulines was spared the dissolution due to the teaching activities of the sisters. The complex was in 1900 in the possession of the Franciscans - Institute of the School Sisters to Graz , today Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception , over, the Ursulines in the newly built convent in the Leonhardstraße relocated. The Benefiziatenhaus, completed in 1699, was also demolished in 1900. The Trinity Church was spared changes.

Today the church is subordinate to the parish Graz-Mariä Himmelfahrt (Franciscan Church) , which is looked after by the Franciscans , and belongs to the dean's office Graz-Mitte of the city church Graz .

Architecture and design

The church was built in the style of the Italian Baroque and corresponds to the type of a pilaster church (like the Jesuit church Il Gesù in Rome). However, it is characterized by a transition from the French to the domestic building tradition and is thus a typical representative of the so-called Habsburg Baroque, an expression of the South German-Austrian Baroque. The front facade is characterized by monumental columns, a cornice and a semicircular gable with lateral volutes . Above the portal is a sculpture of the Archangel Michael in armor with the balance of the Last Judgment . In the side niches are the statues of Mary and Joseph . The pediment is dominated by a representation of the Holy Trinity , with God the Father and Jesus Christ in the center. Above it, the Holy Spirit is shown in the form of a stucco dove. A slender wooden roof turret with an onion roof closes the gable on the Mur side.

The interior of the church has a uniform baroque interior. The vaulted church space is accompanied by side chapels with galleries. The high altar has another representation of the Trinity. Between the columns there are sculptures of the four church fathers: Gregory the Great , Hieronymus , Ambrosius and Augustine . The angular and therefore unusual for the Baroque pulpit was donated by the Princess von Eggenberg. The sound roof is crowned by a half-length figure of God the Father. On the middle south side altar there is a picture of St. Ursula , the namesake of the Ursuline order.
