The parish church of St. Andrä is located on St.-Andrä-Platz in the 5th district of Graz, Gries . It is consecrated to the Apostle Andreas , and parish church of the parish Graz-St. Andrä in the dean's office Graz-Mitte of the city church Graz .

History and design

The church building was part of the former Dominican monastery. With the relocation of the city parish from Graz Cathedral to the city parish church, the Dominicans lost their monastery church. So they decided to move to Murvorstadt. A first church at this point already existed in the early Gothic period , the first documented mention is known from 1270. The old sacred building had become too small for the friars and they bought land so that they could expand. The current building was built according to plans by Archangelo Carlone between 1616 and 1627. The monastery building was attached to the south, which existed until the time of Emperor Joseph II and was handed over to world priests in 1783 as part of the Josephine reforms . In the 18th century, the church was redesigned in Baroque style , before August Ortwein gave it its current facade in neo-renaissance style in 1876 . From 1962 to 1969, former bishop Johann Weber was a priest of the parish.

The interior was also redesigned several times, most recently in 1981 and 1982. The three-aisled staggered hall church is flanked by a cross chapel (1670) and an Andreas chapel (1717). The church is consecrated to St. Andrew , one of the twelve apostles. His martyrdom is shown in a picture on the high altar, which has only been in its current location since 1838. The Styrian Baroque painter Hans Adam Weissenkircher created the upper picture depicting the circumcision of Christ on the Joseph altar.

Since 1999 very different contemporary artists have been invited to further design the interior of the church. Since then, there has been a permanent engagement with contemporary cultural work in the church of St. Andrä under the Andrä Kunst logo . The church is not treated as an exhibition space, but as a spiritually defined space in which targeted interventions open up an important dialogue. One window with acrylic glazing and grating arches outwards like a dome, another glows inwards using monochrome TV monitors.

Since the end of 2010, the church has also been very bright on the outside. Gustav Troger calls his exterior design with the inscriptions “Present”.
