St. Andrä Square
The St. Andrae place is a place in the fifth Graz district Gries . Dominikanergasse, Dreihackengasse, Grenadiergasse and Belgiergasse branch off from it. The St. Andrä church is also located on the square.
History and Development
The church hamlet around St. Andräkirche is one of the oldest and most important parts of the medieval Murvorstadt. Today's St. Andräplatz is located on the former cemetery area of St. Andräkirche. The Dominican cemetery was only finally closed by Emperor Joseph II for hygienic reasons in 1807 and thus released the area that St. Andräplatz today occupies. From this it can be concluded that the Andrämarkt as well as the former Straßgangerstrasse, which had its exit in the area of the St. Andräkirche, cannot be located at today's St. Andräplatz. At the beginning of the 18th century , under Emperor Joseph II, the military presence in Graz increased, especially in the area around St. Andräkirche. The adjacent Dominican monastery became the "small Dominican barracks" in 1808; this suggests that the former cemetery was used as a parade ground.
Naming
The application for the (re-) naming of St. Andräplatz was accepted with a majority on April 14, 2011 in a meeting of the Graz municipal council.
