life and work

Facade of Graz Sporgasse 3

In Graz you can find works by Ortwein at Haus Sporgasse 3, where he created the Art Nouveau facade, in the parish churches of St. Andrä in Gries (Graz) , in St. Leonhard and St. Veit , in which the painting on the ceiling in 1884 based on his designs was executed. For more than 17 years, from 1871 to 1888, August Ortwein published a nine-volume table on the art of the German Renaissance in individual deliveries , which documented not only arts and crafts but also works of architecture. "Without a recognizable chronological system, the building representations were published topographically as measurement tables and provided with short texts by various authors. The tables are less historical-analytical than documentary and, because of the great attention to detail, were often used as a compendium for the reconstruction of buildings and for the addition of components used. "

Honors
