August Scheffers

August Karl Friedrich Scheffers (born September 29, 1832 in Güstrow , † February 1, 1888 in Leipzig ) was a German architect and university professor .

Life

August Scheffers was born into a simple family as the son of a hat maker and could therefore only attend the lower school in Plau am See . Like his father, he then turned to the trade and initially became a bricklayer . However, he acquired further knowledge and thus managed to be admitted to study at the Berlin Building Academy and the Berlin Art Academy . He completed his studies from 1851 to 1855. He then got a job as a teacher at the Holzminden building trade school . In 1864 he left school. In 1868 he became director of the Altona trade school .

In 1875, Scheffers accepted an appointment as professor of architecture at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Leipzig . There he became head of the department in the field of architecture. He received for recording and autographing the Renaissance monuments from Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. of Mecklenburg the Mecklenburg Medal of Merit for Art and Science in gold .
