(Karl Ernst) Hermann Krause

Karl Ernst Hermann Krause , actually: Hermann Krause (born September 10, 1822 in Northeim , † May 28, 1892 in Rostock ) was a German philologist , high school teacher and Low German linguist.

Life

(Karl Ernst) Hermann Krause was born as the son of the captain of the King's German Legion Louis Krause in Northeim. He attended grammar school there, then the pedagogy in Ilfeld . He enrolled at the University of Göttingen in 1841 , where he studied philology and mathematics with Friedrich Wieseler and Karl Friedrich Hermann . In 1845 he acquired the teaching certificate for the subjects philology, history, geography and mathematics. He initially taught in Northeim and Göttingen and was appointed to the Lüneburg Knight Academy in 1846 . After the knight academy was closed, the transfer to the grammar school in Stade followed in 1850 . In 1865 he was appointed head of the Rostock City School . In the following years he reformed the entire higher education system in Rostock. On May 28, 1893, he died of a heart condition in Rostock.

His estate is in the Rostock City Archives and in the archives of the Stade History and Local History Association in the Lower Saxony State Archives in Stade.

progeny

Krause was married to Henriette, geb. Wyneken, the sister of his first wife Johanna, geb. Wyneken. From this marriage a daughter and three sons emerged, including the botanist Ernst Krause and the archivist Ludwig Krause .

Act

Krause was interested in many things. Already in his youth he conducted botanical and mineralogical studies. He studied the Low German language and the nature and history of the places where he worked. He joined the respective local historical associations or helped to create them as a constituent member, including the Association for History and Antiquities of the Duchies of Bremen and Verden , the Association for Rostock's Antiquities , of which he was deputy chairman from 1883 to 1890, or the Association for Hanseatic History . He corresponded with many other associations and published small contributions in their writings.

The “school man” Krause has never published a major scientific work; his Brief High German Language Teaching was designed more for school use. However, he published a large number of scientific articles and communications that reflected his broad interests. He also published articles on zoological and botanical topics, from cultural history to numismatics . In the annual reports of historical studies he was a contributor for the northern German coastal regions.

He worked for the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm and wrote around 400 articles for the General German Biography . Many of the biographed persons would not have been included in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie without his help and relate to people from the special history of his sphere of activity.

Awards

The University of Rostock gave it on 1 February 1880, the honorary degree Doctor philosophiae honoris causa .
