Ludwig Krause

Ludwig Johann Eduard Krause (born March 9, 1863 in Stade , † April 1, 1924 in Rostock ) was a German archivist and local history researcher .

Life

Ludwig Krause was a younger son and second of four children of the grammar school teacher (Karl Ernst) Hermann Krause (1822-1892) and his second wife Henriette, born. Wyneken . The parents had moved from Stade to Rostock in 1865, where the father had taken on the position of director of the large city school . Ludwig Krause completed his Abitur here. The subsequent law studies at the University of Göttingen and the University of Rostock remained without a degree. In 1884 he became a corps bow bearer of the Visigothia Rostock.

As an employee of the fire insurance company, he was also engaged in scientifically sound research in Rostock antiquities. From 1900 he worked on the board of the Rostock Antiquities Association, which his father co-founded in 1883, and was entrusted several times with the duties of secretary and accounting officer. In 1907 Krause got the longed-for position as a scientific official (according to other sources as an unskilled worker) in the Rostock council archive. Ten years later he was the state archivist and director of the library of the knights and landscape in Rostock.

Ludwig Krause remained unmarried and lived with his sister in Rostock. In 1924, both siblings passed away voluntarily. His brother Ernst Krause died in 1942.

Honors

In 1919 Krause received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock. In 1924 he became an honorary member of the Rostock Association. Two years after his death, the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology erected a memorial stone for him in the Rostock Heath . In 2009 a street in the Rostock district of Nienhagen was named after him.
