Founding member and long-time secretary of the association: Georg Christian Friedrich Lisch

The association for Mecklenburg history and antiquity , initially in the typical spelling of the time, Association for Meklenburg history and antiquity , was founded on January 17, 1835 in Schwerin as a history association for both parts of Mecklenburg , today for the Mecklenburg part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

history

The regional association, founded by 48 people, quickly achieved large numbers of members.

The Schwerin archivist Georg Christian Friedrich Lisch , who for many decades as secretary directed the fate of the association and published its yearbooks, played a decisive role in the founding of the association. In the early days, the association recruited its members primarily from upper social circles and from the educated middle class. In the period up to the Second World War, several thousand people registered in the association's register.

After the war-related break in the club's activities, it was initially not possible to revive the club in the post-war period under the impression of changed framework conditions in Mecklenburg.

The division of Germany initially led to a two-pronged development in the post-war period. In the GDR , supporters of the regional history association's traditional fields of activity initially formed in new structures under the umbrella of the GDR Kulturbund . The preservation of monuments, traditionally anchored in the association, began in the 1950s under Ewald Schuldt to establish itself as an independent specialist area and to develop its own forms of organization. After the re-establishment of the association in the Federal Republic of Germany initially failed in the early 1980s, a small group of enthusiasts gathered around Helge Bei der Wieden in a legally dependent working group under the umbrella of the Mecklenburg Foundation (at that time in Ratzeburg) and began with the Continuation of the yearbook series of the old traditional association.

On November 16, 1991, a good year after the political reunification of divided Germany, the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology was re-established in Schwerin. V.

The Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology has traditionally and still today its seat and office in the Schwerin State Archive . Today it is one of the oldest German historical societies.
