The medal for art and science was donated in gold and silver by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on February 28, 1859 . The medal could be awarded to all persons for special merits and achievements in the field of art or science.

The medal is a medal with the portrait of the reigning duke looking to the left on the obverse. The words FRIEDRICH FRANZ GROSSHERZOG VON MECKLENBURG SCHWERIN all around . On the back is a closed oak wreath, in the middle of which is written SCIENCE AND ARTS .

The ribbon is light blue with narrow stripes on the inside and red on the outside. The gold medal was worn around the neck and the silver medal on the left breast or through the buttonhole.

According to a decree of the Duke Regent Johann Albrecht on December 8, 1900, the silver medal could also be awarded on the broad red, blue and yellow border of the medal of merit. This type of award was indicated by the additional addition ar B. (on the red ribbon).
