Old Catholic Church (Graz)
The Old Catholic Church of the Resurrection is the parish church of the Old Catholic Church Community of Graz for Styria and southern Burgenland . It was consecrated to St. Christopher and was renamed the Old Catholic Church of the Resurrection in 2010 after a renovation. It is located in the 5th district of Graz, Gries , in the building of today's New Middle School St. Andrä.
History and design
In the monastery-like building, which is the location of the Old Catholic Church, which is inconspicuous from the outside, there has been an orphanage with an associated church in the Murvorstadt since the end of the 17th century. The two-storey sacred building was lost when it was converted into a barracks. In later times the facility was redesigned into a school building, nothing remained of the equipment of the former orphanage.
The merger of the churches independent of Rome to form the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches took place in 1889. The first Old Catholic service took place in Graz before the turn of the 20th century. In 1901 a large hall in the vaults of the ground floor was adapted for the construction of an Old Catholic church.
The premises were redesigned for the first time in the 1960s and then again in 2010.
A special feature inside the church is a nativity scene in the form of a winged altar .
The associated Old Catholic Cemetery is an area of the Central Cemetery . It was rented by the Graz City Administration in 1932 and represents an Old Catholic section that is unique in Europe.
