The Church of St. Johann and Paul is a small Roman Catholic mountain church in the 15th district of Wetzelsdorf in  Graz . It is owned by the city of Graz and, as a mess chapel of the parish Graz-Christkönig in the dean's office Graz-West, is subordinate to the city church of Graz .

Location

The church stands at 563  m above sea level. A. high summit from the Devonian Dolomites 200 m above the Krottendorf district. The elevation marks a northern branch of the Buchkogel . On Südostfuß is the Agriculture and Forestry Alt-Grottenhof, west of the Church of Feliferhof boiler covers a large area fenced army - shooting . Just below the hilltop there is an inn that can be reached from three directions on hiking trails and on a local road.

The church complex stands on an artificial structure, the floor plan of which, however, is not related to the church. Oral tradition says that instead of the little church there were once the ruins of a castle on the mountain top. Evidence of this is provided by the masonry below the church and the toponym Spielberg (from “spieken” = to peek), which is still used today for the mountain flu that runs out to the east.

History and design

The church is surrounded by forest on a ridge above Wetzelsdorf. In 1507 a pilgrimage church called St. Johann am Kögelein was mentioned for the first time and was consecrated to John the Baptist. The church was built in the late renaissance style. A new building was enlarged between 1589 and 1594 by a foundation of Archduchess Maria Anna of Bavaria , the wife of Archduke Karl II. This was accompanied by a change of patronage. Pietro Valnegro , the successor of the court architect Giovanni Pietro de Pomis , directed the construction work, in which the originally flat nave was also given a vault.

Until 1996 the Church of St. Johann and Paul was owned by the Admont Abbey , whose coat of arms is also on the high altar. In 1895 a lightning strike damaged the church building. It was restored in 1896. The municipality of Graz has been owned by the church since 1996 and at the same time purchased the Buchkogel grounds from Admont Abbey.

A picture on the high altar shows the two Roman brothers, martyrs and church patrons John and Paul , whom the Roman emperor Julian had beheaded. A protective cloak Madonna next to a depiction of Archduchess Maria can be found on the left side altar. The Baroque painter Bartolomeo Altomonte from Admont created the ceiling frescoes. They show the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love as well as scenes from the lives of the two church patrons, John and Paul. In the center the apotheosis of the saint is depicted.

Archaeological excavations

In 2004, employees of the Universalmuseum Joanneum uncovered settlement remains from the Neolithic (New Stone Age). The finds are the oldest houses in Styria. They were dated around 3500 BC. Dated. After the remains of the settlement had been filled in, a children's playground was built, which thematically matches the excavations.
