History of the Sisters of the Cross in Graz

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Cross was founded in 1856 in the Schweizer and established a maids' asylum in Graz in Leonhardstrasse as early as 1871. In 1872 the priest hospital was founded in Grabenstrasse, in 1878 after-school care centers in the parishes of St. Andrä and Münzgraben and in 1885 the Maria Hilf sanatorium. In 1887 the provincial house was built in Kreuzgasse. In 1891 the sisters from Graz also took over nursing in the Villach hospital, from which the local branch developed. In 1983 the Annaheim was built in Riesstrasse as a denominational retirement and nursing home. In the meantime, some of these institutions have been handed over to other religious orders due to the lack of young members of the Cross Sisters.

Convention

The entire complex was built in late historical - neo-Gothic styles from 1887. It was not until 1891 that a church was added to the building and in 1904/1905 the Josefshaus in the south wing was added. The complex is elongated and consists of four floors. In the middle of the front facade there is a central projection with a gable topped with a pointed helmet. The St. Ulrika community for elderly sisters also lives in the main house, while the St. Josef community is now housed in the Josefshaus for elderly sisters.

Church of the Holy Cross

The monastery church of the Sisters of the Cross is a wall pillar gallery church and was built in 1891 in neo-Gothic style. It has a single nave longhouse with a single bay gallery and a groin vault. The interior is uniformly in the neo-Gothic style. All sculptural works are by the artist Peter Neuböck .

sanatorium

Opposite the convent building of the Cross Sisters is the sanatorium they look after. It was founded in 1885, two years before the establishment of the Order, and opened in 1887. Extension buildings followed in 1952, 1960 and 1987 (bed and operating room wing). It has been run as a private clinic since 1999, with the in-house St. Theresia nursing station for nurses. With 130 beds, the hospital is one of the largest private providers in Styria. The house is a general hospital, with CT and MR institutes, as well as endoscopy and laboratory facilities. The Mariahilf chapel is also located here. It is equipped with glass painting of the Tyrolean glass painting and mosaic factory.
