The Church of St. Johannes is a Roman Catholic church in the 5th  Graz district of Gries .

History and design

In the midst of the Trieste settlement built during the interwar period , the parish center of St. John was consecrated in 1976. It was built according to the plans of the architect Hermann Worschitz in a cubic reinforced concrete construction. Only a cross indicates the sacred building from the outside. It is enlightened in the dark.

The floor plan of the church is square and the ceiling is supported by cross-shaped beams. The ambo and tabernacle are made of stainless steel and a crucifix by the Styrian artist Alexander Silveri hangs on the wall . In 1992 the colorful glass windows were created on the sides. They were designed by Adolf and Heide Osterider . The baptistery is adjacent to the church, which was also decorated by the artist couple. The baptismal font was created according to a design by the Graz sculptor Erwin Huber . On the street-side outer wall there is a remarkable bronze sculpture of John the Baptist, also created by this artist in 1996.

The church including the parish center is a listed building .
