Discocactus bahiensis is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bahiensis refers to the occurrence in the Brazilian state of Bahia .
description
Discocactus bahiensis grows individually, with heavily thorny, depressed spherical to spherical bodies that reach a diameter of 8 to 18 centimeters. There are 10 to 15 ribs . The 5 to 13 backward curved spines are up to 3 centimeters long. The protruding cephalium is made of white wool and a few short bristles. The slender funnel-shaped, yellowish white flowers are 4 to 5 centimeters long. The fruits are small.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Discocactus bahiensis is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia . The first description was in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Discocactus bahiensis subsp. bahiensis
- Discocactus bahiensis subsp. subviridigriseus (Buining & Brederoo) PJBraun & Esteves
- Discocactus bahiensis subsp. gracilis PJBraun & Esteves
Discocactus bahiensis is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002 it was called " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. classified as endangered. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
