Discocactus is a genus of plants inthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Greek noun "δίσκος" (discos) for discus in the sense of flat and refers to the flattened, discus-like shape of the plants.
description
The species of the genus Discocactus are pressed-spherical to spherical and usually individually growing plants, with mostly numerous ribs, somewhat broadened at the base, and well-developed warts. The areoles are usually covered by mostly strong thorns . The terminal, up to 4 centimeters high cephalium is somewhat depressed. It consists of white, yellowish to grayish white wool and can have bristle thorns.
The fragrant, white, funnel-shaped or tray-shaped flowers arise on the edge of the cephalium and open at night. Your pericarpel, which is bare at the base, is covered with scales further up. There is no wool or hair . The slender flower tube is also covered with scales.
The spherical to club-shaped to elongated, white to pink to bright red fruits are glabrous and slightly fleshy. They open at a vertical gap and have a perennial remnant of flowers. The fruits contain broadly oval to almost spherical, glossy black seeds that are 2 to 2.5 millimeters long.
