Discocactus zehntneri is a species of the genus Discocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet zehntneri honors the Swiss biologist Leo Zehntner (1864–1961).

description

Discocactus zehntneri grows individually, with cloudy green, spherical to flattened spherical bodies that reach heights of up to 7 centimeters and diameters of up to 10 centimeters. The 12 to 20 ribs are slightly humped and up to 10 millimeters high. The areoles are somewhat sunk into the ribs. The strong, white to yellowish thorns are darker at their tips and turn light brown to whitish. They are curved downwards and so tightly interwoven that they cover the plant body. There is no central spine. The approximately 11 radial spines arranged in a comb shape are up to 4.2 centimeters long. The cephalium , formed from cream-colored to white wool and yellow to brownish bristles up to 2 centimeters long , is up to 1 centimeter high and has a diameter of 3.5 centimeters.

The slender funnel-shaped flowers are up to 9 inches long. The club-shaped fruits are red and have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Discocactus zehntneri is distributed in the north of the Brazilian state of Bahia at altitudes of 400 to 1100 meters. The first description was in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose .

Anderson only distinguishes between the following two subspecies:

  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. tenneri
  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. boomianus (Buining & Brederoo) NPTaylor & Zappi

Other subspecies can be found in the literature

  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. albispinus (Buining & Brederoo) PJBraun & Esteves 1995
  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. araneispinus (Buining & Brederoo) PJBraun & Esteves 1995
  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. buenekeri (Abraham) PJBraun & Esteves 1995
  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. horstiorum (PJBraun) PJBraun & Esteves 1995
  • Discocactus zehntneri subsp. petr-halfarii (Zachar) MRSantos & MCMachado 2015

Discocactus zehntneri is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. classified as low risk. In 2002 the subspecies Discocactus zehntneri subsp. boomianus listed as Vulnerable (VU) . About the threat from Discocactus zehntneri subsp. In 2002 only insufficient data were available for zehntneri . In the 2010 update, the subspecies were not reassessed and removed from the red list.
