The Trichocereeae are a tribe in the subfamily Cactoideae of the cactus family (Cactaceae).

description

The tree-like to shrubby growing Trichocereeae normally form non-segmented, spherical to columnar trunks , which are usually ribbed, ware-bearing or ribbed-ware-bearing.

The small to fairly large, regular or bilaterally symmetrical flowers appear laterally or below the apex and open during the day or at night. The flower cup is scaled or covered with hair .

The fruits are fleshy to berry-like and sometimes burst lengthways. They contain small to medium-sized seeds that vary in shape. The hilum and micropyle of the seeds are connected or united. Appendages are usually absent. A Strophiole is present in some.

Systematics and distribution

The tribe Trichocereeae is distributed south of the equator in South America and on the Galápagos Islands .

The current classification as a tribe of the Cactaceae was made in 1958 by Franz Buxbaum . According to Edward Frederick Anderson (2005) the following genera belong to the tribe:

To this extent the tribe is not monophyletic .
