Facheiroa is a genus of plants from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the word "Facheiro", which is used in Brazil to designate some cacti plants.

description

The species of the genus Facheiroa grow shrubby or tree-like, are heavily branched, have a short trunk and reach heights of up to 5 meters. The shoots are ascending, cylindrical and have 12 to 25 (rarely more) narrow ribs with variable thorns . The bristly cephalium is sunken or superficial.

The tubular flowers are covered with roof tile-like scales and open at night. Your flower cup and the flower tube are richly covered with hair.

The fleshy, spherical, semi-transparent, non-tearing fruits are green to brown or purple. They contain a juicy pulp. The small to medium-sized seeds are egg-shaped, semi-matt and brown to black-brown.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Facheiroa are common in the northeast of Brazil .

The first plants were discovered in October 1917 by Leo Zehntner in the Serra de Cannabrava in the Xique-Xique district of Bahia . The first description of the genus with the then only species Facheiroa publiflora , the type species of the genus, was made in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . This name turned out to be a synonym for Facheiroa ulei . The genus Zehntnerella , which they described at the same time, is now a synonym for the genus Facheiroa , or the taxon is understood as a subgenus.

The genus includes the following species:

  • Facheiroa cephaliomelana Buining & Brederoo
    • Facheiroa cephaliomelana subsp. cephaliomelana
    • Facheiroa cephaliomelana subsp. estevesii (PJBraun) NPTaylor & Zappi
  • Facheiroa squamosa (pickle) PJBraun & Esteves
    • Facheiroa squamosa subsp. squamosa
    • Facheiroa squamosa subsp. polygona (F.Ritter) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Facheiroa ulei (Gürke) Werderm.

To subgenus facheiroa be facheiroa ulei , facheiroa cephaliomelana and among connoisseurs still controversial types facheiroa pilosa F.Ritter (1979), facheiroa estevesii P.J.Braun (1986) and facheiroa tenebrosa P.J.Braun & Esteves counted (1988). The subgenus Zehntnerella (Britton & Rose) PJBraun & Esteves (1986) includes Facheiroa squamosa and the still controversial species Facheiroa chaetacantha (F.Ritter) PJBraun & Esteves (1979) and Facheiroa braunii Esteves (2004).
