Facheiroa cephaliomelana is a species of plant in the genus Facheiroa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the dark colored cephalium.

description

Facheiroa cephaliomelana grows branching from the base with columnar green to dark green or gray-green shoots and reaches heights of 1.5 to 3.8 meters. The shoots have a diameter of 4 to 7 centimeters. There are 22 to 27 rounded ribs . The almost circular areoles are covered with yellowish white wool and hair. The fine straight thorns arising from them are yellowish and have a brown tip. The 1 to 3 central spines are up to 4 centimeters long, the 9 to 13 radial spines 0.8 to 2.8 centimeters long. The 0.75 to 1 meter long and 3 centimeter wide cephalium includes up to 9 ribs and consists of yellow to yellowish brown hair that is up to 8 millimeters long.

The whitish pink to pink flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long and 2.8 centimeters in diameter. The brownish hairy, purple to dark pink to brownish fruits are up to 1.5 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Facheiroa cephaliomelana is common in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Minas Gerais at altitudes of 550 to 750 meters. The first description was published in 1975 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo (1917-1999). The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Facheiroa cephaliomelana subsp. cephaliomelana
  • Facheiroa cephaliomelana subsp. estevesii (PJBraun) NPTaylor & Zappi

Facheiroa cephaliomelana subsp. estevesii flowers and fruit on shoots with and without cephalium.

Whether Facheiroa estevesii P.J. Brown should be understood as an independent or, as mentioned above, as a subspecies is currently still very controversial among connoisseurs of the genus. The same applies to Facheiroa tenebrosa P.J.Braun & Esteves , which some authors also assign to Facheiroa cephaliomelana .

Facheiroa cephaliomelana is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. endangered, classified. Before the 2010 update, the two subspecies were also listed as endangered. Those were not re-rated and removed from the red list.
