Facheiroa squamosa is a species of plant in the genus Facheiroa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the scaly flowers.
description
Facheiroa squamosa grows tree-shaped with a mostly conspicuous trunk and reaches heights of 2.5 to 8 meters. The green shoots have a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. There are 17 to 24 rather low ribs . The yellowish brown to gray thorns differ in 1 to 5 central spines 1 to 3 centimeters long and 8 to 12 radial spines that are 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long. There is no cephalium .
The white to greenish-brown flowers are 3 to 4.5 centimeters long and 1.6 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The green fruits are up to 2 centimeters long and have the same diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Facheiroa squamosa is distributed in the Brazilian state of Bahia at altitudes of 390 to 1250 meters. The first description as Cereus squamosus was published in 1908 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke . Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira placed them in the genus Facheiroa in 1989 . The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Facheiroa squamosa subsp. squamosa
- Facheiroa squamosa subsp. polygona
The two subspecies differ in the number of ribs and the size of the flowers.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
