Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke

Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke (born November 17, 1854 in Beuthen , † March 16, 1911 in Berlin ) was a German botanist and cactus specialist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Gürke ".

Life

He attended a secondary school 1st order in Görlitz and graduated from it on September 1, 1875. He then studied natural sciences in Berlin. In the further course he worked as a teacher at a preparatory institute for ensigns in Görlitz and in 1886 he joined the college of the Botanical Museum in Berlin as a scientific assistant . In 1892 he received his doctorate in Göttingen as a doctor philosophiae with a thesis on the Malvaceae . Thereupon he was appointed assistant custodian on July 9, 1892 and already on January 4, 1893, custodian of the Berlin Museum. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the title of Professor on April 15, 1904 and, after the museum moved to Dahlem, the Red Eagle Order, IV class. On April 4, 1906 he was admitted to the Leopoldina .

From 1905 to 1910 he was the first chairman of the German Cactus Society .

Publications

After Karl Moritz Schumann's death he published Blooming Cacti and edited the part on Malvaceae (1892) for the Flora Brasiliensis by Martius . For the The natural plant families (1887-1915) of Adolf Engler and Carl Prantl , he wrote the parts on the Hydrocharitaceae (together with PFA Ascherson , 1889), on the Melianthaceae (1895), on the Ebenaceae and Styracaceae (1891) and on the Boraginaceae (1893).

Honors

Karl Schumann named the plant genus Guerkea from the family of the dog poison plants (Apocynaceae) after Gürke .
