Carl Prantl

Carl Anton Eugen Prantl (born September 10, 1849 in Munich , † February 24, 1893 in Breslau ), also Karl Anton Eugen Prantl , was a Bavarian , German botanist and forest scientist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Prantl ".

Live and act

Prantl studied in Munich. In 1870 he was with the dissertation Das Inulin . A PhD contribution to plant physiology . He then worked for Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli and Julius Sachs . In 1873 he was at the University of Würzburg habilitation . In 1880 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1877 he became a professor at the Aschaffenburg Forestry School , and in 1889 at the University of Breslau , where he also became director of the botanical garden. Prantl worked particularly on cryptogams . One of his most important works was the multi-volume edition The Natural Plant Families , which he published together with Adolf Engler .

He was the son of the philosopher Carl von Prantl .

Honors

The plant genus Prantleia Mez from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) is named after him .
