NTP pool

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NTP-Pool project is a dynamic collection of time servers that make the current time available to everyone free of charge via NTP ( Network Time Protocol ) on the Internet .

Infrastructure

The computers in the pool are part of the pool.ntp.org host names and the various subdomains , which are named after geographical zones. They are made available to the NTP clients via round robin DNS .

In mid-2019, a total of around 4,200 active time servers were integrated into the project - around 2,800 of them in Europe alone, but only 48 in Africa. Since the project is organized in a decentralized manner , it is not possible to give precise information on the number of clients. On the project website, the number is estimated at 5 to 15 million.

However, there is still a need for additional time servers in the pool, as this also reduces the load on the individual servers. There are still too few servers, especially in Africa and many Asian countries. In order to be included in the pool, broadband internet connection, a static IP address and the exact time from another data source are required.

The project was initiated by Adrian von Bidder and has been continued by Ask Bjørn Hansen since July 2005.
