Acanthocalycium is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). Its botanical name ( Greek : thorny calyx ) indicates the thorny scaling of the flowers, which is typical for the genus.

description

Acanthocalycia are spherical to columnar stem succulents up to 60 cm in height and 20 cm in diameter. The plants usually remain unbranched or branch out slightly from the bases. The areoles , which stand on up to 20 ribs, have many thorns up to 8 cm long , which are only indistinctly divided into the edge and central spine.

The funnel-shaped flowers formed by areoles near the apex have scales on the outside that taper into pointed thorns. This characteristic is typical of the genus Acanthocalycium and occurs only in this. Inside the the ovary containing region of the flower (ovary) with a ring of hairs protected. The color of the bracts is either yellow to orange or white to pink or magenta.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Acanthocalycium are all native to Argentina .

The first description by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936. The type species is Echinocactus spiniflorus K.Schum. The genus includes the following species:

A synonym for the genus is Spinicalycium Frič (1935, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 36.1).
