Acanthocalycium klimpelianum is a species of plant in the genus Acanthocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet klimpelianum honors the German gardener Georg Klimpel, whoran a cactus nurseryin Berlin-Kleinmachnow .
description
Acanthocalycium klimpelianum grows individually with flattened, spherical shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. There are about 19 sharp ribs that are slightly indented. The elliptical areoles are yellowish brown and up to 6 millimeters long. The one to four central spines are straight, sub-like and brownish. The lowest of them is directed downwards. The six to ten radial spines are unequal in length.
The white flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters long.
Systematics and distribution
Acanthocalycium klimpelianum is common in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca , Santiago del Estero and Córdoba at altitudes of 1000 to 1500 meters.
The first description as Echinopsis klimpeliana by E. Weidlich and Erich Werdermann was published in 1928. Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Acanthocalycium in 1936 .
