Acanthocalycium glaucum is a species of plant in the genus Acanthocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet glaucum comes from Latin and means 'blue-gray, also sea green' and refers to the color of the plant body.

Acanthocalycium glaucum grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical, blue-green shoots and reaches heights of 6 to 15 centimeters with diameters of 3 to 7 centimeters. There are 8 to 14 blunt, notched ribs that are up to 1.5 centimeters high. From the white areoles , which are 1.5 to 2 centimeters apart , arise black thorns that are broadened at their base. The 1 to 2 central spines that are sometimes present are usually absent. The 5 to 10 radial spines are straight, sub-like and 0.5 to 2 inches long.

The yellow, short funnel-shaped flowers are up to 6 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The spherical fruits are dark green and can reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters.

Systematics and distribution

Acanthocalycium glaucum is common in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca and La Rioja at altitudes of 2000 to 3600 meters.

The first description was published in 1964 by Friedrich Ritter .
