Friedrich Ritter

Friedrich Ritter (born May 9, 1898 in Quentel , † April 9, 1989 in Puerto de la Cruz , Tenerife ) was a German geologist and botanist who was best known as a cactus collector. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " F.Ritter ".

Live and act

Friedrich Ritter studied biology, geology and paleontology at the University of Marburg . Before completing his studies, he emigrated to Mexico with his parents in 1920 . In Mexico he worked for various mining companies. During this time he began to deal more intensively with cacti. From 1930 he went on study trips to Peru , Bolivia , Argentina , Brazil and Chile . From 1937 to 1952 he lived in Germany and also served in the German Wehrmacht. In 1952 he emigrated again to South America and settled in Chile. From 1972 to the end of 1976 he lived in Paraguay . From the end of 1976 he lived again in Germany with his sister in Spangenberg near Kassel. In 1982 he moved to the Canaries.

Honors

The genus Ritterocereus Backeb was named in his honor . the plant family of the cactus plants (Cactaceae), now a synonym for Stenocereus . The cactus genus Ritterocactus Doweld is also named after him. In honor of Friedrich Ritter, many types of cactus have also been named, for example: Aztekium ritteri , Espostoa ritteri , Gymnocalycium ritterianum , Rebutia ritteri , Oreocereus ritteri and Parodia ritteri .
