Aztekium ritteri is a species of the genus Aztekium in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ritteri honors the German cactus specialist Friedrich Ritter .
description
Aztekium ritteri initially grows individually with olive-green, almost spherical to spherical bodies that later sprout and form groups. They reach heights of 1 to 3 centimeters and a diameter of 2 to 6 centimeters. The 6 to 11 ribs , rounded at the edges, have numerous folds on their flanks. The ribs are 5 to 9 millimeters high and 3 to 10 millimeters wide. The often short-lived one or two thorns are often bent or twisted.
The white flowers have a more or less pink central stripe and reach a diameter of 7 to 14 millimeters.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Aztekium ritteri is widespread in the Sierra Madre Oriental in the Mexican state of Nuevo León , where it grows on limestone and gypsum rocks.
The first description as Echinocactus ritteri by Friedrich Bödeker was published in 1928. A year later, Bödeker placed them in the genus Aztekium, which he had newly established .
Aztekium ritteri is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. classified as not endangered in nature.
