from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gertrude Kleinová (born August 13, 1918 in Brno , † February 19, 1975 in Las Vegas ) was a Czechoslovak table tennis player of Jewish origin. She took part in sporting events of the Jewish gymnastics and sports club Makabi in Czechoslovakia and was one of the most famous Jewish athletes in the country in the interwar period , including successful world championships . She also appeared as Traute Kleinová and Trude Kleinová , after her (second) marriage she was named Gertrude Vogelová-Kleinová .

Life

Gertrude Kleinová grew up in a poor Jewish family; she became a half-orphan at an early age. The family received insufficient social allowances from the Jewish religious community, and little Gertrude still had to do various temporary jobs as a student. While still at school, she joined the Jewish sports and gymnastics club Makkabi Brno and started her sporting career at an early age.

Since 1939 Kleinová was married to Jacob (Jacques) Schalinger, a former functionary of the association. At the beginning of December 1941, because of her Jewish descent, she was deported together with her husband and team coach Erik Vogel on Transport G, initially to the Theresienstadt ghetto and in autumn 1943 on Transport ET to Auschwitz . In contrast to her husband, she survived and in 1946 moved, together with Erik Vogel, to the USA, where they married. They lived in Las Vegas, Kleinová died of cancer in 1975.

Athletic career

The coaches noticed Kleinová's talent early on. She joined the Maccabi Club . Her first notable success was the victory over the reigning national and world champion Marie Kettnerová in 1935. This led to her nomination for the world championship.

Kleinová took part in the World Championships in 1935 , 1936 and 1937 . In 1935 she won the title with the Czechoslovak women's team together with Marie Kettnerová and Marie Šmídová . In 1936 Kleinová defended the women's team title together with Kettnerová, Šmídová and Věra Votrubcová . In 1936 she was also world champion in mixed with Miloslav Hamer .
