International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame , abbreviated IJSHOF , is a hall of fame for athletes, sports officials and journalists of the Jewish faith. The honor is given regardless of the nationality of the person. The current chairman is Alan Sherman.

founding

The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was founded on July 7, 1981 in the Israeli city of Netanya . The first honors were given in 1979. The initiator of the Hall of Fame was the American television producer Joseph M. Siegman. Siegman was also the chair of the Hall of Fame until 1989 and later headed the election committee. The IJSHOF is in contrast to the US National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame , into which only US athletes can be admitted.

operator

The Hall of Fame is operated by the Maccabi Association and the Israeli Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sports , as well as other sports officials. It is located on the Wingate Institute campus.

choice

In addition to exceptional sporting success, the candidate must also have distinguished himself socially through special achievements. He must have at least one Jewish parent and profess his Jewish faith. Exceptional sporting success counts:

An additional, special honor goes to those people who have distinguished themselves through their lifelong commitment in sport for society and for the State of Israel. There is also a special honor for people who are particularly committed as officials or athletes and who have distinguished themselves internationally. Anyone can make nominations. It is expected that everyone who makes an election proposal gives reasons for it. The honor can also be given posthumously .
