Károly Kárpáti [ ˈkaːroj ˈkaːrpaːti ] (born July 2, 1906 in Eger , † September 23, 1996 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian wrestler and coach.

Life

Kárpáti started wrestling early and won his first Hungarian title in 1925. As the first Hungarian top wrestler, he dealt intensively with the free style and thus became the "progenitor" of the Hungarian wrestlers who were later so successful in this style. From 1927 he himself participated in international championships with great success. He often met German wrestlers. In 1936 he fought z. B. against the Munich Wolfgang Ehrl at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin for the gold medal in the lightweight, freestyle and won just about on points.

Kárpáti was of Jewish faith. As a result, he was interned by the Nazis in a concentration camp in Ukraine during World War II , but luckily survived. After the war, he coached the Hungarian national wrestling team for many years and wrote several textbooks on wrestling.

• 1934 3rd place in Stockholm, F, We, with victory over Arvi Pihlajamäki , Finland and defeats against Thure Andersson , Sweden and Jean Földeák , Germany;

National successes

After winning the first Hungarian championship in 1925, another eleven titles followed in both styles by 1936. After 1945 Károly Kárpáti made great contributions to the Hungarian national wrestling team, which he led to the top of the world during his coaching days. Olympic victories and world championship titles that his wrestlers achieved testify to his skills as a trainer.
