Ernst Steinig (born January 2, 1900 in Klein Lassowitz ; † unknown) was a German wrestler and two-time medalist at European Championships.

Career

Ernst Steinig grew up in Dortmund and started wrestling there as a teenager. He started for ASV Heros Dortmund and after 1920 developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. In 1924 he first drew attention to himself when he became German runner-up in the featherweight division in Mannheim . In the same year he also started at the European Championships in Neunkirchen / Saar , where he finished seventh in the featherweight division.

In 1925, the first European championship of the newly organized international wrestling federation took place in Milan . Ernst Steinig, who was nominated for it by the German Wrestling Association (DASV v. 1891), had made enormous progress compared to the previous year and defeated there in the featherweight a. a. also the Swedish master Erik Malmberg . In the final battle, however, he was defeated by the Hungarian Jenő Németh , who then started many years as a guest wrestler for AC Cologne-Mülheim in 1892, on points and became vice European champion.

Ernst also won a medal at the European Championships in Riga in 1926 , the bronze one. Against Erik Malmberg he suffered a defeat this time. He also lost to Voldemar Väli from Estonia , who still had a great career ahead of him.

At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , Ernst won four fights in a row, but then lost again to Voldemar Väli and had to retire due to reaching five points and came in a good fifth place.

In his last participation in an international championship, the European championship in Dortmund, Ernst managed a victory over Olympic champion Kustaa Pihlajamäki from Finland . After another point win over the Austrian Karl Stiedl, he was surprisingly defeated by the Hungarian József Tásnády and ended up on the ungrateful fourth place.

Ernst Steinig then ended his international wrestling career. But he started for his club Heros Dortmund for many years, with whom he became German team champion in 1927 and 1932.
