Eduard Sperling (born November 29, 1902 in Hamm , † February 25, 1985 in Dortmund) was a successful German wrestler in the 1920s and 1930s.
Career
Sperling started as a boxer at SC Alemannia Dortmund , but quickly switched to the wrestlers and achieved initial successes in the Westphalian region. In order to move forward, he moved to Nuremberg in 1925 and joined the SC in 1904 Maxvorstadt Nuremberg . There his abilities were recognized and purposefully developed under the wing of Karl Döppel . As early as 1926 he was one of the top German wrestlers and remained in this for well over ten years. In 1928 he returned to Dortmund and joined the ASV Heros Dortmund .
Eduard Sperling was an extremely ambitious, always well prepared, daring and with his means not squeamish, but always fair wrestler. He wrestled in many tournaments in Scandinavia , which at the time gathered the entire world elite, and did not avoid any opponent. The successes he achieved were impressive. After completing his active career, he made himself available as a referee for his sport for years.
International success
- 1927 European champion in Budapest in the lightweight (Greco-Roman style) with victories over Parisel, France , Metzner, Yugoslavia , Pettersson, Sweden and Osvald Käpp , Estonia ,
- 1928 Silver medal at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in the lightweight (Greco-Roman style) with victories over Postini, Italy , Janssens, Belgium , Blazyca, Poland , Yalaz, Turkey , Edvard Vesterlund , Finland and defeats against Vavra, Czechoslovakia and Lajos Keresztes , Hungary ,
- 1929 European lightweight champion in Dortmund (Greco-Roman style) with victories over Károly Kárpáti , Hungary, Aage Meier, Denmark , Dahl, Norway , Tozzi, Italy and Bergström, Sweden,
- 1930 4th place at the European championships in Stockholm in the lightweight (Greco-Roman style) after victories over Huupponen, Finland and Maudr, Czechoslovakia. Due to a point defeat against Erik Malmberg , Sweden, he reached 5 missing points and had to retire before the final round,
- 1931 European lightweight champion in Prague (Greco-Roman style) with victories over Antti Mäki , Finland, Nolten, Netherlands , Bajorek, Poland, Voldemar Väli , Estonia and Ludwig Schlanger, Austria ,
- 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles bronze medal (Greco-Roman style). Sperling lost in the first round against Erik Malmberg on points and received three missing points. In the second and third round he won over Abraham Kurland , Denmark and Aarne Reini , Finland, each on points and received one missing point, so after the third round he had five missing points and had to retire. Kurland shouldered Miyazaki, Japan in the first round , lost to Sperling in the second round and had a bye in the third round. In the fourth round he lost to Malmberg. With the happy bye, Kurland received the silver medal and Sperling had to be satisfied with the bronze medal, although he had beaten Kurland superiorly. According to the current rules, Sperling would have been a silver medalist.
- 1933 European Championship in Helsinki . Sperling wrestled again in the lightweight (Greco-Roman style) and had to give up after a victory over Abraham Kurland because he was so injured in the next fight against Reini that he could not continue the tournament;
- 1934 4th place European championship in Rome in the light weight (Greco-Roman style) with victories over Josef Herda , Czechoslovakia, Aarne Reini, Finland, the later European champion, Borlovan, Yugoslavia, Graßl, Austria and a controversial point defeat against Abraham Kurland, whom he had previously had struck five times in five fights;
- 1935 4th place European Featherweight Championship in Brussels (freestyle) with a victory over Morrell, England and defeats to Taucer, Italy and Ferenc Tóth, Hungary;
- 1938 5th place European featherweight championship in Tallinn (Greco-Roman style) after defeating Denis Perret , Switzerland and losing to Kustaa Pihlajamäki , Finland and Solsvik, Norway.
In 12 international matches that he played for Germany, he came to 11 wins.

- 1927 1st place German Championship in Greco-Roman style ahead of Oswald Möchel , Mülheim, and Paul Muschall , Hörde ;
- 1931 1st place in the German Championship in Greco-Roman style ahead of Otto Krehl , Stuttgart-Untertürkheim , and Fritz Schäfer , Zweibrücken ;
- 1932 1st place German Championship in Greco-Roman style ahead of Jenö Nemeth, Mülheim, and Fritz Weikart , Hörde;
- 1934 3rd place German Championship in Greco-Roman style behind Wolfgang Ehrl , Munich , and Heinrich Schwarzkopf , Koblenz ;
- 1934 1st place in the German Freestyle Championship ahead of Ehrl and Weikart;
- 1936 1st place in the German Championship in Greco-Roman style ahead of Sebastian Hering , Neuaubing , and Georg Weidner , Stuttgart .
In 1926 and 1936 Sperling started in featherweight, in the remaining years in lightweight.
- In 1930 and 1932 he won the German team championship with his club ASV Heros Dortmund.
