Fritz Schäfer (born September 7, 1912 in Pirmasens , † October 15, 1973 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) was a German wrestler in both styles (Greco-Roman and freestyle).

Life

Fritz Schäfer started wrestling in the school department of the AK Pirmasens at the age of eight. He learned the trade of a butcher. The team of the AK Pirmasens, which at that time belonged to such well-known wrestlers as Paul Böhmer and Emil Poganiatz , became German team champions in 1929. In the preliminary rounds, Schäfer was used several times at the age of 18 and defeated the Olympic bantamweight champion of 1928, Kurt Leucht from Nuremberg , on points at the featherweight division , thus showing his great wrestling talent. In 1930 he became German youth champion in the class up to 65 kg body weight. Fritz Schäfer, already ambitious and unsteady at that time, wanted a regular place in a team and therefore moved to Zweibrücken, but at the same time agreed to VfK Schifferstadt . A suspension by the association was the result. Ultimately, he wrestled for a few years at VfK Schifferstadt to switch to SC Siegfried Ludwigshafen in 1935 and become German team champion with this club from 1937 to 1941.

During the war, Schäfer worked as a butcher in an army slaughterhouse in France . At the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the French , volunteered for the French Foreign Legion and spent the years 1945 to 1951 in North Africa and Indochina . In 1951 he was released, married for the second time in France and stayed in France. In Germany he is considered lost. In 1972 he was found by former Ludwigshafen wrestling comrades, completely impoverished, and, meanwhile widowed for the second time, returned to Ludwigshafen am Rhein , where he died on October 15, 1973.
