Gustav Gocke (born February 17, 1919 in Dortmund , † February 9, 2005 ) was a German wrestler in the world class or middleweight division.

Career

Gustav Gocke was a member of the ASV Heros Dortmund . As a result of the year he was born, he was one of the German wrestlers whose international career has suffered greatly from the war and the post-war period. In the Greco-Roman style he became German champion in the welterweight division in 1941 and in the middleweight division in 1943, 1949, 1950 and 1953. In 1943 he defeated European champion Fritz Schäfer , Ludwigshafen am Rhein. In free style he was German champion in 1941 (welterweight) and 1951 (middleweight) .

Qualified for the 1951 World Championships in Helsinki (free style), it was not he who was nominated, but the GDR wrestler Kurt Hoffmann , Greiz. To the detriment of Gockes and two other West German wrestlers, the nominated GDR wrestlers Hoffmann, Fritz Albrecht , Viernau and Herbert Albrecht , Suhl, did not appear in Helsinki.

The 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki were the culmination of Gocke's career. In free style (middleweight) he won over Chirinos, Venezuela, Assam, Mexico, Genuth, Argentina and Neuhaus, Switzerland, was defeated by silver medalist Gholam Reza Takhti , Iran, on points and was 4th winner . In the Greco-Roman style he had Lospech. After a victory over Gallegatti, Italy, he then met Axel Grönberg , Sweden, and Kalervo Rauhala , Finland, the later gold and silver medal winners, to whom he lost just on points.

Nevertheless, he was awarded for his sporting achievements on 12./13. Awarded the silver bay leaf in October 1951.

In 12 international matches for Germany he achieved 5 victories. He was also five times German team champion with Heros Dortmund.
