Herbert Albrecht grew up in Albrechts near Suhl . From an early age, the working-class son was drawn to wrestling, which was very popular there. It wasn't long before he won prizes in regional youth competitions. In 1943 he became German youth champion before he had to do military service until 1945. He survived the war unscathed. After the end of the war he continued his sporting career and started with great success until 1954 at the all-German championships that were still taking place at that time and from 1949 at the GDR championships. Delegated by Albrechts to SC Motor Zella-Mehlis , he also achieved some very good results at international championships. Due to the political situation in post-war Germany, however, he was only able to take part in such a championship for the first time in 1955, now at the age of 30. In 1960 he was also able to qualify for the all-German Olympic team in Rome . He referred in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight Fritz Dirscherl from Kelheim and Heinz Eichelbaum from Oberhausen on the places. He played his last international championship in 1963, at the age of 38, against the world champion from the Soviet Union Rostom Abashidze and the later Swedish world champion Per Svensson .
After finishing his career as an active wrestler, he was still active as a coach for years. A special joy for him was that his son Fredi Albrecht followed in his footsteps and also became an excellent wrestler and made it to the vice world champion.
Herbert Albrecht was an apprentice trainer in the "Simson" power plant in Suhl.
