Jiří Kormaník (born March 26, 1935 in Scăiuş , Caraş-Severin County , Romania ; † November 3, 2017 ) was a Czechoslovakian wrestler . He won at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the middleweight division.

Career

Jiří Kormaník grew up in Chomutov and started wrestling there as a teenager at the ASK Valzap Chomutov sports club . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. At a height of 1.74 m, he competed in the middleweight and light heavyweight division. He made his debut at international championships at the 1958 World Cup in Budapest . He played there in the light heavyweight division three fights, where he wrestled against Herbert Albrecht from Suhl , but against György Gurics from Hungary and Rune Jansson from Sweden lost. He came in 8th place.

In 1960 he represented Czechoslovakia at the Olympic Games in Rome . Here he started in the middleweight division, landed two wins and then fought against Lothar Metz from Rostock in a draw. He lost his fourth fight against the Turkish welterweight champion from 1958 Kâzım Ayvaz . He was eliminated and finished in 9th place.

At the 1961 World Championships in Yokohama , Jiří Kormaník also started in free style because the ČSSR could only send a limited number of wrestlers to Yokohama for reasons of cost. In the free style he managed a win, but defeats against Géza Hollósi from Hungary and Mansour Mehdizadeh from Iran , who became world champion in this weight class, forced him to retire. He came in 5th place. He took the same place in the Greco-Roman style with a win, a draw and a defeat against Yavuz Selekman from Turkey.

Also at the 1962 World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) only a few Czechoslovak wrestlers competed . Jiří Kormaník was not one of them and in 1963 he did not start at any international championships. In 1964 he took part in the Olympic Games for the second time. In Tokyo he started in Greco-Roman. Middleweight style. With four wins, one against Lothar Metz and two draws against Stig Persson from Sweden and Géza Hollósi, he won the silver medal in Tokyo behind Branislav Simić from Yugoslavia and ahead of Lothar Metz. He no longer had the opportunity to fight for the gold medal against Simić because after the 6th round he had exceeded the maximum number of points allowed for faults (6), while Simić was still below.

In 1965 Jiří Kormaník also won a world championship medal with third place at the World Championships in Tampere . The draw he scored against the strong Turk Tevfik Kış was remarkable . In 1966, Jiří Kormaník started at the European Championship, which took place for the first time since 1949 and was held in Essen . He afforded the faux pas after a draw against the Finn Kaarlo Wieser to be shouldered by the Luxembourger Raymund Schummer, with which he was eliminated and only came in 15th place.

Even in 1967 he was not very successful, because he landed both at the European Championships in Minsk and at the World Championships in Bucharest in 8th place in the middleweight division. In Minsk he lost against the Poles Bolesław Mackiewicz and the Hungarians László Sillai and in Bucharest against Lothar Metz and again against Sillai, who became world champion.

With three wins and two draws, Jiří Kormaník managed to win another medal (bronze medal) at the 1968 European Middleweight Championship in Västerås . At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 he did not succeed, because he only won there against the Swiss Jean-Marie Chardonnens and lost to Valentin Olenik from the Soviet Union and Branislav Simić from Yugoslavia and only reached 10th place.

After the Olympic Games in 1968 he ended his career as an active wrestler and worked as a coach for his home club.
