Stig "Buckla" Persson (born November 28, 1934 in Klippan , Skåne län ; † July 1, 1968 in Nybro , Kalmar län ) was a Swedish wrestler .

Life

Stig Persson started wrestling in Skåne , where he moved to the top Swedish club Brottning Klub (BK) Klippan . He developed into one of the best Swedish wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style in the middle and light heavyweight division by the end of the 1950s. However, since there were world class wrestlers in Sweden in these weight classes with Karl-Erik Nilsson , Axel Grönberg , Viking Palm and Rune Jansson at that time, it was not until 1961 that he was used for the first time in an international championship.

From 1958 he was able to gain experience in the then common and very popular international fights. He won victories over the Finns Koskela, Eino Ikola and Veikko Ketola, over Siegfried Neufang from the GDR, against Karl-Heinz Markert from the FRG, as well as "draws" against Gheorghe Popovici from Romania , Wladimir Smolinski from Poland and Horst Heß from the FRG .

Stig Persson's debut at an international championship came at the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama . He scored there in the light heavyweight division against the strong Hungarian György Gurics , but lost to Gheorghe Popovici and Tevfik Kış from Turkey and finished in 6th place. A year later, in 1962, he improved to 5th place at the World Championships in Toledo, Ohio . He came there in the middleweight division to a victory over the Swiss Kurt Rusterholz and wrestled against György Gurics and the Bulgarian Krali Bimbalow in a draw. Against Tevfik Kış, who became world champion in this tournament , he lost on points and was eliminated after the 4th round.

At the 1963 World Championships in Helsingborg and the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo Stig Persson came in the middleweight division on the 8th and 9th place. He achieved at these championships u. a. Draw against György Gurics and Jiří Kormaník from Czechoslovakia . But he lost to Nikolai Tschutschalow from the USSR in 1963 and to Lothar Metz from the GDR in 1964 and was eliminated early.

At the 1965 World Championships in Tampere , Stig Persson remained undefeated in four fights. But he wrestled after a victory over Tatsumi Hayama from Japan against Petar Krumow from Bulgaria , Petar Cucic from Yugoslavia and Jiří Kormaník each only a draw, so he had to retire after the 4th round because of reaching the permissible number of error points and took 6th place.

In 1966 he finally managed to win a medal at an international championship. At the European Championships in Essen , he came third in the middleweight division with three wins. An even better result prevented the four draws he scored against Lothar Metz, Tevfik Kış , Anatoli Kirow from the USSR and Wenko Zinzarow from Bulgaria, all of them highly decorated world class wrestlers. At the 1967 World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) he wrestled a. a. Again a draw against Petar Krumow from Bulgaria , but lost to Valentin Olenik from the USSR and ended up in 7th place.

For the last time before his untimely death, Stig Persson was at the European Championship in Minsk in 1967 at an international championship. He finished there only 11th place, but remained undefeated with three draws against Jiří Kormaník, Bolesław Mackiewicz from Poland and László Sillai from Hungary . However, he was eliminated after these three fights because of reaching more than 6 fault points.

Overall, it can be said that Stig Persson could have done much more successfully with a more offensive way of ringing, with which he could have turned some of his many draws into a win. However, almost all wrestlers against whom he tied were wrestlers from the then extremely strong Eastern Bloc countries and thus belonged to the absolute top of the world.
